Dog of the Month: Piper
September Dog of the Month
Our September feature this month is the adorable Piper! This little firecracker is a classic Westie, giving her parents quite a run for their money as a first dog. Throughout stubborn behaviours to itchy skin, we’ve been happy to get to know Piper and the whole family.
Thanks so much for all the support, Shannon!

Tell us about your pet!
Piper is a West Highland Terrier. We got her when she was a puppy from Edmonton - [she turned] 1 in August. When you read any description of a Westie Piper fits it to a tee! She is super friendly and trusting (so much for a guard dog) but is fiercely independent, determined and just a little bit stubborn. She's so independent that we have to bribe her to come upstairs and sleep with us some nights. Even with bribes she'll only spend a few minutes with us and then will go downstairs on her own to go to sleep. She loves to sit on the back of the couch so she can look out the window and watch all the people, dogs and birds go by.
What brought you to Discover Dogs, and what keeps you coming back?
When researching Westies we knew they could be stubborn and hard to train but if you started training them at an early age they would be very well behaved. We had heard good things about DD so we booked in with Kat for 1:1 training and she was so patient with us as new pet owners and answered all our questions and taught us how to be good dog owners. Kat also noticed that Piper was scratching more than normal at our training session and mentioned she might have a food allergy. We were already feeding Piper a raw food diet but I didn't realize that even on raw food dogs could be allergic to certain proteins. Kat was awesome on educating us on how to do an elimination diet with Piper and we got her on exotic raw proteins to help clear up the allergy. Piper is doing amazing now and her coat and skin are in great condition! Westies are known to have lots of skin issues so I'm glad we were able to get to the root of the problem quickly. I also love the fact that DD is a locally run, small business - the owners are lovely, supportive people as is all the staff. They helped us to get through the puppy, first time pet owner anxiety and patiently answered all of our questions.
What product or service has been a life changer?
1:1 training and puppy classes were SO needed! We're looking forward to the leash training classes this summer. We also always have a bottle of Olie Probiotics in our fridge to help get Piper's gut healthy. Carnivora raw food helped us to get Piper's food allergies under control and to figure out what the culprit was.
What is the greatest thing you have learned at DD?
That it's not about training your dog - it's about training us!
